Case study - Bikes Only
“TLP System’s technical team understood both Sapphire and TLP, which was an indispensable resource when making the transition.”
General Manager of Bikes Only Transport Manelle Brand speaks of the Brisbane-based family business which started back in 1994, as a labour of love for motorcycles. Motorcycle riders are passionate about their bikes, so when her brother Kurt Johnston was looking to buy a motorcycle interstate, he could find no one to transfer the bike back to Queensland with the care he needed. Seeing a gap in the market he decided to purchase a ute and a trailer and start a new business providing the best customised, reliable and safe motorcycle transportation across Australia.
Bikes Only’s first major customer was the Queensland Department of Infrastructure compliance facility for “learner bikes” (250cc) which nicely kicked off the company. Further growth came from winning the transportation business for the Moto Group, now called TeamMoto, and from there growth was rapid, fueled solely by word of mouth.
Bikes Only Transport has grown to be the preferred carrier for the motorcycle industry Australia wide. They have a wide spread of customers including motorbike distributors, dealers, removalists, motoring organisations, tour operators and various federal and state government departments. A third of their business is comprised of private individuals who are buying and selling on line or taking their prized bikes on one-way adventure tours and needing the bikes safely recovered from their destinations and sent home.
Manelle started working part time with the business early in the piece, moving to full-time once her children were old enough and has been in the business for over 20 years. She brought business acumen gained from her years in business management. Manelle is responsible for bringing on TLP’s Transport Management System into Bikes Only over five years ago.
When Manelle started with Bikes Only, the business was running on Microsoft Word templates for all of their manifests, job orders and other paperwork. The solution was static and difficult to keep up with jobs that frequently morph so Manelle brought Sapphire by Translogix. After a few years Sapphire support became too expensive and limited, with delays in response and unmanageable upgrades. Manelle knew the business had to make a change and fortuitously came across TLP System’s technical team in Queensland who understood both Sapphire and TLP, which was an indispensable resource when making the transition.
Manelle worked for a year with TLP Systems to tailor their system to fit Bikes Only’s unique set of logistics produced by the individualised way in which they interact with their exacting motorcycle customers. Through TLP; Bikes Only’s twenty employees are integrated with an external network of bike shops across the country, providing a seamless extension of the company’s coverage and superior service across Australia. Manelle says that the technology that TLP provides, plays a large role in how they can effectively engage with such a wide and diverse set of customers and partners while still providing tailored service.
Manelle adds that TLP’s support has always been very good and continues to improve as the relationship grows. She sees customer support as a key advantage to any business and will look in the future at ways that TLP Systems can help her use technology to provide an even deeper level of support to her own customers through innovative services, engendered by new ways of engaging existing and new business partnerships.
